Inner Cloister

COB strip lights, steel, electronics / 15’ x 75’ x 75’ / 2023

Inner Cloister, a site-specific installation created for the largest cathedral in England, was commissioned by Artichoke Trust for Lumiere Durham. Replicating the shape and scale of the cloister’s stone arches in light, it demarcates a separate and ethereal inner arcade that mirrors the physical one surrounding it. An effect running through the lights emulates the appearance of walking, acting as a reminder of the monks and nuns who would have moved through these corridors for nearly a thousand years. As a threshold, the artwork aims to make visible a boundary between this realm and another.
